This uncommon miniature sheet shows a nicely detailed Moon in full illumination, with two smaller diagrams depicting the new Moon and the first quarter Moon. Johann Elert Bode, a self-taught astronomer, served as director of the astronomical observatory of the Berlin Academy of Science for nearly 40 years. He edited the Astonomisches Jahrbuch every year from 1774 to 1826, and published several popular astronomy texts and atlases. The sheet was published in an edition of Bode's Anleitung zur Kenntniss des Gestirnten Himmels, a popular introduction to astronomy first published in 1768 with many subsequent editions. Engraved by S. Halle.
