A. A Pic-Tour Map of Arizona, by Petley Studio's Inc., circa 1950, printed color (22.0 x 18.1"). This colorful pictorial map promoting the state was drawn by artist Don Bloodgood and published by Petley Studios in Phoenix. It is filled with cartoonish characters and playful illustrations highlighting the state's attractions including natural wonders, points of interest, historical sites, Indian reservations, and much more. A few highlights include the Grand Canyon, Mogollon Rim, Monument Valley, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and Tombstone. A note below the title declares "Arizona combines the romance of the old west and the promise of the space age." The verso contains related text and illustrations and an unused mailing address panel. Price 35 cents. Copyrighted by H.S. Crocker. Self-folding into pictorial wrappers (5.5 x 9.0"). Condition: Clean and colorful, issued folding.
B. Reg Manning's Cartoon Map of Arizona, by Reg Manning, dated 1938, black & white (16.0 x 19.0"). This pictorial map of the state presents the road network, cities and towns, and is densely filled with illustrations featuring natural wonders, points of interest, historically important places, and much more. Copious notations fill the gaps including "Beautiful Highways May Tempt You To Step On It - Please Don't!", "Here We See Man's Mightiest Work, The Boulder Dam", and "Here Is The Salt River Valley - Irrigated Agricultural Empire and World Renowned Winter Playground." The map was typically issued in the rear pocket of his Cartoon Guide of Arizona, which is not included with this example. Although born in Kansas City, Missouri, Reginald Manning moved to Phoenix, Arizona as a teenager and remained in Arizona for the remainder of his life. His only formal art training was in high school, however he became known for his editorial cartoons, even winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1951 for one of his cartoons about the Korean War entitled "Hats." Condition: Issued folding with a few miniscule holes along one fold only visible when held to light.
