This is a very uncommon map of the Banda Islands, part of the important Spice Islands of Indonesia. Until the mid-nineteenth century, the Banda Islands were the only source of the spices nutmeg and mace. Controlling production of these fine spices was a major motivation for the Dutch conquest of the islands in the 1621. The map shows the plantations, Dutch forts, and an erupting volcano.

Condition: A

A sharp impression on a slightly toned sheet with a fleur-de-lis watermark. There are some minor spots and printer's ink residue in the map image and a small dampstain in the bottom blank margin.
