Rare Panoramic View of Constantinople with Labeled Buildings

Subject: Istanbul, Turkey
Period: 1740 (circa)
Color: Hand Color
26 x 8.8 inches
66 x 22.4 cm
This unusual and highly stylized view emphasizes the domes and spires of Constantinople. The panoramic view includes a 26-point legend, in German and Latin, below. A ribbon title cartouche and artistically rendered coat of arms with a crescent moon symbolizing the Ottoman Empire. Printed from two plates on 2 joined sheets, as issued. A very rare engraving published in Augsburg.
A dark impression on bright sheets with a coat of arms watermark on the right-hand sheet, issued folding and now flattened. There are professional repairs to several minor separations along the folds and to a small hole at right (near "Galata"), with minor loss of image.
