The how and who of cartography is presented in these two volumes. The first book is a detailed survey of mapmaking from ancient times to the mid 20th century. "The Story of Maps" written by Lloyd Brown, map curator at University of Michigan and librarian at Peabody Institute, published by Little, Brown and Co., Boston,1949, 397 pp, illustrated, with notes, bibliography & index, hardbound in cloth. "The Mapmakers: The Story of the Great pioneers in Cartography from Antiquity to the Space Age" by John Noble Wilford, Vintage Books, 1982, 415 pp, b/w illustrations, softcover.

First with shelf wear, binding at lower edge split along spine. Second with minor shelf wear.
