This is a fine set of wood engravings published in German by Friedrich von Hellwald. Many are the same engravings seen in the American publication Picturesque America and others we have not seen before. The set includes some very uncommon views of Milwaukee, St. Paul, St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati and others. All but 2 are full page engravings with blank verso. Two of the Chicago street scenes are included on text pages. They are not bound, but enclosed in the original paper wrappers that were issued as a serial subscription. Sold as a collection of plates, not intended as the complete issues.
