This is the 73rd volume of The Edinburgh Review, covering the April and July issues for 1841. The publication covers wide ranging topics including literature, science, current events, politics and more. The contents feature an article on the coalfields of the West Midlands (UK) with fold-out geological chart, a review of Charles Murray's Travels in North America from 1834-36, a discussion on the condition and rights of women, and a 30-page article concerning Texas and William Kennedy's recently published The Rise, Progress, and Prospects of the Republic of Texas. The editor discusses the history of Texas, notes Britain's recent recognition of its independence, and recommends "Mr. Kennedy's instructive work." The editor concludes that "the love of independence that animates the settler of the Texas wilderness, and the useful results of his toils and endurance, are described by Mr. Kennedy with an eloquence that will, we are sure, inspire his readers with kindred sentiments." 589 pages. Hardbound in quarter calf with tips over paper boards with gilt title on the spine.
