This amusing cartoon by J.S. Pughe skewers the souvenir postcard trend. It appeared in the October 17, 1906 edition of Puck, a satirical magazine published in the United States from 1871-1918. In the first decade of the 20th century, there was an explosion of enthusiasm for postcards, with hundreds of millions of "penny postals" traveling through the U.S. mail annually. No wonder Uncle Sam (representing the U.S. Postal Service) looks so overwhelmed at the center of the illustration! Surrounding him are vignettes of far-flung travelers sending postcards from remote locations: the North Pole, the Sahara Desert, Robinson Crusoe's island, and, lastly, Hell. Published by Keppler & Schwarzmann.
