This superb engraving illustrates the flags of all seafaring nations including those from Europe, Africa and Asia. The main table features 192 flags including 50 that have "never been brought to light," and based on a flag chart by Pieter Schenk from 1711. This chart is notable for its early depiction of the New England flag at top right. An additional table flanking the right side of the sheet, likely produced by Keulen himself, features a smaller table with 48 additional flags. This table includes an early depiction of an American flag with 13 Stars and Stripes representing the colonies (bottom left). The stars here are arranged in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern or Francis Hopkinson Pattern, which was used by the U.S. Navy well into the 20th century. Titles in Dutch, French and English are located at top. Printed on two sheets and joined. There is a crack in the plate at bottom center.

We found no past sales records for this chart featuring an American flag.
