This is sculptor Malvina Hoffman’s controversial map showing the world surrounded by photographs of the statues she produced for the Chicago Field Museum to depict the world’s “racial stocks.” Each illustration is numbered with a corresponding location on the map. The racial depictions, reinforcing stereotypes, were questioned by some when the map was published. They became seen as blatantly offensive during the Civil Rights movement and under pressure Hammond withdrew the map from circulation. The map is accompanied by the 24-page booklet (9.4 x 12.2") describing different races by Dr. Henry Field, the former Curator of Physical Anthropology at the museum.
