This superb, decorative map of the continent is engraved to distinguish between those regions under Catholic influence and those regions yet to be penetrated. Of the Scherer maps of South America, this may be the most scarce; this is the first time we've listed it in auction in the last 25 years. In the Atlantic, a huge ship is seen in route to Brazil and Paraguay with its decked filled with Jesuit missionaries. In the Pacific, a similar ship is portrayed in route to Peru and Chili. The ornate title cartouche is supported by putti, and trumpets extend from the heavens with verses from Psalms. This is a very beautiful map and a graphic record of the spread of Christianity in the New World.
