This volume, written by an oceanographer, examines islands that were either mythical or have disappeared from maps. Stommel "describes how these little pin-pricks of land got on to charts, who 'discovered' them, and why some were so long-lived." At the back of the volume is a facsimile Admiralty chart of the Indian Ocean (dated 1817) and the Pacific Ocean on verso. Includes a foreword by Rear-Admiral G. S. Ritchie. 146 pages. Hardbound in gray cloth with gilt title on the spine.
