This elegantly engraved map of central and eastern Africa extends to include the northern part of Madagascar. The most dominant feature of the map is its depiction of the classic Ptolemaic sources of the Nile, located in the large lakes of Zaire and Zaflan south of the equator. Much of the topography and place names are fictitious, as is typical of Africa maps of the period. The unusual title cartouche is engraved in a carpet motif.

References: Pastoureau, SANSON V A [19].

Condition: A

A dark impression with contemporary outline color on a sheet with an elaborate coat of arms watermark. There are a couple of short creases at top, a hint of color offsetting and a bit of printer's ink residue. Light foxing and soiling are confined to the blank margins.
