This scarce and intriguing chart of the Moon reflects the Hevelius nomenclature, using Latinized terrestrial names for lunar features. Examples include Pontus Euxinus, Mare Caspium, Mare Mediterra, Mt. Sinai, Mt. Etna, Palestina, and Mauritania, to just name a few. Eventually, Hevelius's nomenclature would be mostly phased out by the competing Riccioli system, wherein lunar features were named after scientists and notable figures. The main lunar chart is surrounded by 6 diagrams related to the Moon's orbit and phase, with a large and decorative Mortar cannon at the bottom. Published by John Cooke. During the Enlightenment, encyclopedias like Cooke's spread scientific, astronomical, and mathematical concepts to literate audiences.
