This striking image of the Moon was one of several lunar images to appear in the first volume of Mallet's Description de l'Univers. One of the most decorative of Mallet's lunar images, it presents a Hevelian Moon in the night sky over an idyllic village. Two stargazers observe from the banks of a river. This engraving was first published by Mallet in 1683, and then re-engraved for a German edition in 1684 published by Johann David Zunners. The German title, Der Mont, and Fig 52 appear above the upper neatline.
