This charming miniature map was largely copied from John Gibson's 1758 double-hemisphere world map, however with updates within the South Seas, as the title states. Also updated are the coastlines of North America, New Zealand and Australia, the latter of which is still connected to Tasmania. There are very few place names, although Owhyhee has been added in the Pacific to reflect Captain Cook's third voyage. Published in a later edition of Richard Turner's A New and Easy Introduction to Universal Geography, which first appeared in 1780, with a number of editions through 1819. This is the second world map plate that was engraved for the series, easily identified by its simple oval title cartouche, and began appearing in 1800.
