This Civil War-era wood engraving illustrates the Capitol in its final stages of completion and just after a Confederate attack damaged the building. The scaffolding that would eventually be replaced by the capitol dome is depicted proudly flying the Stars and Stripes while the left wing of the building is ablaze and smoking. In the background is a partially completed Washington Monument (not completed until 1884) and several sailboats in the Potomac River. Drawn and engraved by C.H. Andrews.

A nice impression on paper with a "McMurray Maker 1861" watermark. There is a hint of toning along the centerfold and sheet edges.
