This 8-page document was produced by the Regional Planning Conference of Los Angeles County and features a centerfold map entitled Tentative Regional Highway System (9.3 x 13") and a bird's-eye view of the Los Angeles region on the front cover with a large magnifying glass over downtown. This Conference led directly to the formation of the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission, the first county planning commission in the United States. The Conference stemmed from the recognition that “the plastic communities of the Southland were rapidly crystallizing into a gigantic metropolis” and that the communities shared common interests and concerns requiring an interdependent approach. The ambitious proposal was to coordinate regional development of highways, subdivisions, sanitation, water supply, parks, zoning, etc. Highways were given priority as demonstrated by the featured centerfold map. The document and plan showed remarkable vision at a time the population of Los Angeles County was about 1,000,000 and enabled the rapid growth of the area to its current population of over 10 million. Illustrated paper wrappers. We found only one other example of this publication on OCLC (Harvard).
