This lot features 9 vibrant land classification maps covering parts of the Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin Valley regions, surveyed from 1887 to 1889. Several national forests and state parks are shown in part, including Tahoe, Eldorado, Calaveras Big Trees, and Yosemite. The maps use vivid color to depict land use, showing merchantable timber, grazing land, cut areas, burned areas, culled land, cultivable land, mining camps, and sawmills. There is excellent detail of mountains, rivers, and lakes. The maps are on a scale of 1/125,000 or 1.8939 miles to an inch, with each covering an approximate area of 880 square miles. Executed under the direction of Charles D. Walcott. Henry Gannett was the head geographer, with land classification by George B. Sudworth. The individual maps are as follows:

The maps are all crisp and colorful, and issued folding on lightly toned sheets. There are short fold separations that have been backed with archival tape and occasional minor wear along folds. A couple of the maps have a few faint purple stains.
