This uncommon wall map version of Phelps & Ensign's important traveler's guide. It depicts the United States as far west as the Rocky Mountains delineating stage, steamboat, canal and railroad routes. Cartographically, a large Iowa Territory includes all of Minnesota and the eastern half of the Dakotas, while a large Missouri Territory extends to the Black Hills and Long's Peak. Texas is shown as a Republic with its borders along the Rio Grande in the west and the Red River to the north. Within Texas, Austin's Colony is named and only a few settlements are shown north and west of the El Camino Real, including Austin (noted as capital), Nashville, Franklin, and Lanesville. In the top left corner of the Republic, the Comanche Indians are noted in the vicinity of the Staked Plain. The unusual wedge between Texas and Missouri Territory is part of Mexico (though Texas might disagree with this delineation). In the bottom right corner, there are thirteen small inset maps detailing the vicinity of major cities, with three other insets of upper Maine, Niagara Falls and the Florida Peninsula. At left there is a small double hemisphere world map and comparative charts of the mountains and rivers of the world. Below the map are several historical vignettes including the landing of the pilgrims, the battle at Lexington, the battle at Bunker Hill, Washington's farewell to his army, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and portraits of ten presidents. An attractive composition that has been professionally conserved with new linen backing and ribbon edging.
