During the Napoleonic Wars, Britain launched two unsuccessful invasions (1806-07) on the region around the Rio de la Plata (present-day Argentina and Uruguay) in order to expand British commerce through new overseas markets. The second invasion was led by General John Whitelocke, which included a light brigade commanded by Robert Craufurd. Craufurd's unit advanced successfully and captured enemy weapons and positions, but was ordered to withdraw by Whitelocke. This action enabled Spanish forces to resettle and entrench, leading to Craufurd's unit being surrounded and eventually forced to surrender. Shortly thereafter, Whitelocke surrendered and British prisoners were released on the condition that the British Navy completely withdraw from the region. These events led to Whitelocke's court-martial, though Craufurd's prowess against essentially guerilla warfare enhanced his reputation as a capable military leader. Craufurd would later command Wellington's Light Division during the Peninsular War (Iberia).

The 216-page volume includes the following four maps: Route of the Expedition Under Brig-Gen. Craufurd in the Years 1806 & 1807 (10.1 x 7.5"); Sketch of Rio de la Plata from Cape St. Mary to Buenos Ayres (6.2 x 9.3"); Montevideo (15.7 x 7.5"); and [Untitled Plan of Buenos Ayres] (10.2 x 7.4"). Published by Whitelocke and printed in London. With errata slip. Hardbound in contemporary full calf.
