This leaf is from the brief transitional period when the new technology of printing with movable type was combined with the more labor intensive methods of hand painting. The earliest printers were trained in the manuscript tradition and incorporated the conventions of historiated initials and illustrations into their early work. At first they left those spaces blank for the illuminator to complete entirely by hand. Later they developed printing methods (using woodcuts or iron engravings) to decorate the leaves.
This leaf on paper from an Italian prayer book is printed in black and red ink, surrounded by engraved scenes from the bible, including baby Jesus. The text is in Latin and translates in part as:
They then received the sevenfold grace:
Wherefore they knew all the languages:
They departed to the diverse climes of the world:
And they then preached the Catholic faith. Come, Holy Spirit.
The Spirit was called the Paraclete:
The gift of God: charity a living fountain:
Spiritual Unction a fire kindled
The sevenfold grace was called charisma.
