First state of this very uncommon map from the reduced-size series of the Mercator-Hondius atlas that was published by Cloppenburg, which included newly engraved maps. The cartography is classic Hondius with the inaccurate mid-Atlantic coastline of North America, and the sweeping northwest coastline. The fictitious islands of Frisland and Brasil are located in the north Atlantic. Hudson Bay is left open to the west for the possibility of a northwest passage to Asia. The map was likely engraved by Pieter Van Den Keere for Cloppenburg's atlas and is richly decorated with sailing ships and sea monsters. Blank verso. This example was published in Philipp Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographicam.

Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographicam was a popular atlas, appearing in over 45 editions during a 100-year period. The first edition was published without maps in the 1620s, and the first edition to include maps was published circa 1641. The various editions were published in different cities throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Nuremberg, and London, often with new sets of maps engraved. This map is from an Amsterdam edition published by Jansson's heirs, which included some maps from Jansson's Atlas Minor.
