This fascinating lot of engravings come from the series of 65 planimetry engravings in the third volume of Mallet's La Geometrie Pratique. Each illustrates a geometric concept nestled into a charming landscapes featuring palaces, distant villages, windmills, and human figures. La Geometrie Pratique was Mallet's final work. It was a study of geometry, trigonometry, planimetry, and stereometry spanning four heavily illustrated volumes. Mallet (1630-1706) served as a soldier in the French army, eventually becoming an Inspector of Fortifications. He was appointed to the court of Louis XIV, where he taught mathematics, drawing on his experience as a military engineer. He published Les Travaux de Mars in 1671 and his magnum opus Description de l’ Univers in 1683, He completed and published La Geometrie Pratique in 1702.
