This is the rare second state of this terrific map of Africa, identical to the first state except for Philip Chetwind replacing Henry Seile in the title cartouche. The map first appeared in Peter Heylin's Cosmographie, originally published by Seile in 1652. After Seile's death in 1662, Chetwind worked on subsequent editions of the popular geography book. The map is a close copy of John Speed's Africa map from 1626, down to its decorative elements, including sailing ships, flying fish, and inland wildlife. The Nile's origins reflect classic Ptolemaic geography, with two lakes in the vicinity of the Congo, Zaire and Zaflan, merging to form the mighty river. The course of the Niger River is incorrectly delineated, and there are many fictitious lakes in Central Africa. Engraved by William Trevethen, with his signature at lower left. The last time this map appeared on the market with Chetwind's imprint was 2008.
