This is an early example of a photolithograph, produced by the Photolithographic Institute of Wilhelm Korn in Berlin for Albert Berg's Die Preussische Expedition nach Ost-Asian Ansichten aus Japan, China und Siam. This work presented 40 photolithographic and 20 chromolithograpic plates of Siam, China and Japan, which were based on watercolors and drawings by Albert Berg and Wilhelm Heine. Berg and Heine were members of the Eulenberg Expedition (1859-62), which was led by Friedrich Albrecht zu Eulenburg and was designed to establish diplomatic and trade relations in the Far East. The expedition succeeded in securing a Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation with Japan, China and Siam.

The images that were captured by Berg and Heine were published in a limited edition of 500 copies. This image depicts a young boy and several chickens outside of a dwelling in Jeddo (Edo), Japan, which later became Tokyo. The photolithograph is on india paper and mounted on a heavy card, as issued. The card measures 27.3 x 21.2".
