This massive woodblock map focuses on the former Echigo Province, now known as Niigata Prefecture. The province is divided into seven counties, which are color-coded and identified in the legend at top right. The map is oriented with north to the bottom left and depicts all the early roads, towns, villages, inns, and temples. A portion of the southeastern tip of Sado Island is included. The block of text in the Sado Strait lists different routes to serve as a guide for travelers and merchants.

Condition: B

Contemporary color, issued folding with moderate soiling and several holes along the sides of the sheet that have been professionally repaired with Japanese tissue, with two areas of loss at bottom right. The rear stiff paper panel is nearly detached. Please note that the first image is a composite image simply because the map is too large to photograph all at once. The map is completely joined as one large wall map.
