This uncommon folio map of Asia includes some interesting cartography. A huge Terre de Iesso, which extends off the map, is separated from the mainland by a narrow strait, below which is Japan without Hokkaido. While most of Duval's maps are based on the cartography of Sanson, this feature does not resemble any of Sanson's maps and appears to have originated with Duval. Also of interest is Korea, which is depicted as an island, and the mythical Lac de Chiamay, which appears in western China with its five rivers flowing south. The Great Wall of China is prominently illustrated, and the Caspian Sea (Mer de Kilan) is depicted in a round formation.
Pierre Duval was Nicolas Sanson's nephew and pupil. He published a wide range of atlases and individual maps including a fine miniature world geography with many of the maps based on Sanson.
