This superb engraving commemorates the arrival of Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria in Lisbon on October 26, 1708. The Archduchess, who was brought to Portugal to marry King John V, is depicted standing before a temple at bottom right, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting with musical instruments, sheet music, and her portrait. The city of Lisbon and the fleet that brought her there are shown in the background. A cupid holding a torch points to a cartouche describing the event. In the heavens above are Juno with a chariot and a peacock, symbolizing marriage and love. This engraving was published by Jeremias Wolff in Paul Decker's Repraesentatio Belli, ob Successionem in Regno Hispanico ... Der Spanische Successions-Krieg, which celebrated the victories of Austria, the German states, Great Britain, Holland, Denmark and Portugal in the War of the Spanish Succession.

An excellent impression on a sturdy, watermarked sheet with light soiling that is mostly confined to the blank margins.
