This map of the continent by Botero was published in the 1598 and 1599 editions of Ruscelli's Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino… The map first appeared in Botero's Delle Relationi Universali (1596). Botero's four maps of the continents were then added to the modern portion of Ruscelli's work. His map of Europe focuses on key regions, major cities, rivers, and mountain ranges. Greenland extends along the top of the map at left and includes the city of S. Thome. Coverage includes northern Africa and a good portion of the Middle East. Engraved by Porro. The 1599 edition is distinguished from the 1598 edition by the printing error at top left that identifies this as "Descrittione d'Irlanda."

Giovanni Botero (1533-1617) was a Jesuit scholar who taught rhetoric and philosophy, became one of the most notable economists of the sixteenth century, and published the popular geographical work Le Relationi Universali.
