This terrific pictorial map of Johns Hopkins Hospital is credited to Richard Q. Yardley. Yardley honed his irreverent style as the editorial cartoonist at The Baltimore Sun. At the bottom of his map is a view highlighting the architecture of the Billing's Building. The rest of the map provides a tour of the various clinics and wards in the teaching hospital complex and the wacky shenanigans therein. In the Woman's Clinic, a new mother is surprised to find she has birthed quadruplets; a patient comes to in a panic on the surgeon's table, various tools scattered about his bedside; in the general pathology department, a researcher examines some disdainful bug; in the cafeteria, the chef slings hash and more hash. The Turtle Derby, a popular annual fundraising event that ended in 1977, is prominently depicted near center. The border shows vignettes of other locations around campus, including Welch Library, the Public Health School, the Animal House, and Fraternity Row. The map features some unfortunate racial caricatures typical of the period, as well as a dash of sexism in its raunchy treatment of the "beauteous nurses." At bottom left is a respectful portrait of Johns Hopkins. An elaborate compass rose above the banner title orients north to the left.
