This is the complete set of the first edition of Carl Wheat's monumental work on western cartography, considered the definitive work detailing the mapping of the American West, with an excellent bibliography.  It lists 1,302 maps, fully annotated with 376 illustrated, many of them folding and colored.  Published in San Francisco by the Institute of Historical Cartography.  First edition limited to 1,000 copies.  Vol. 1 - 264 pages.; Vol. II - 281 pages.; Vol. III - 349 pages.; Vol. IV - 260 pages.; Vol. V, Parts I & 2- 487 pages.  Hardbound in quarter green leatherette over gray cloth boards with gilt titles on the spines.
