This is the rare first edition of this invaluable resource by Henry Gannett. The book lists the origins of 10,000 places names in the United States, a remarkable act of compilation involving "a large correspondence" with "State and local historical societies, State, county, and township officer, and individuals in all parts of the country." Finally the reader can stop pondering why Cuttyhunk is called Cuttyhunk - the island in Massachusetts is "a contraction of the Indian word Poocutoh-hunkunnok, 'thing that lies out in the water.'" 280 pages. Hardbound in black cloth over marbled boards.
