Walter R. Houghton's overview of American politics includes chapters on each stage of political change in the United States from colonial times to 1884, as well as chapters on each of the US presidents through the beginning of Chester A. Arthur's term. The book features six full-color plates depicting various times in US politics, ending with a long folding plate, Diagram of the History of Political Parties in the United States (35.1 x 6.9"). This plate presents a timeline of US politics from 1735-1881 highlighting various political parties and important events that shaped the course of the United States. This book is quite uncommon, particularly with the long folding plate still intact, and we found only two examples offered at auction in the last 20 years. Octavo; 550 pp. with 2 single-page plates and 4 folding plates. Hardbound in tan cloth with black leather label with gilt title on spine.

The plates have bold color, light toning, and light to moderate offsetting. The long folding plate has a few small spots of rubbing and was separated along one fold, which has been skillfully reattached. Several short fold separations have also been archivally repaired. The text has light toning and occasional soiling. The covers are lightly stained and the spine is sunned.
