This lot features two long articles in the October and December issues of The United States Magazine and Democratic Review. In the first issue, the editor claims Santa Anna had suppressed copies of the privately printed "Diario Militar de General Jose Urrea…," but he was able to obtain a copy “only by a happy maneuver.” The editor provides “copious extracts” of the Diario with details of the Goliad massacre and Santa Anna’s responsibility. Translations of the actual documents referred to by Urea are included. The editor also obtained a copy of Santa Anna’s Manifesto “Que de sus Operaciones en la Campana de Tejas…” and provides extracts of his attempt to distance himself from the massacre. In the second issue, the editor provides Santa Anna’s explanation of the defeat at San Jacinto (not his fault) and for his retiring to a nap during the battle followed by details on his imprisonment and release and finally translations of actual documents. The magazine's publisher and editor, John L. O’Sullivan, coined the phrase “the best government is that which governs least” and later the term “manifest destiny,” as he promoted the annexation of Texas. It is likely these translations were the earliest to reach the American public. Streeter describes the articles as “a long and interesting review.” Printed paper wrappers.
