This inventive title page was drawn by Johann Degler and engraved by Ludwig Christoph Glotsch. It centers on Stockholm with its impressive palace and churches. On the adjacent hill, men prepare for war while iron smiths produce weapons and silver smiths mint coins. The imposing military fleet of King Charles XII is anchored in the port, and fishermen deposit a bounty of fish. Below the scene, inscriptions on the walls signify how the sea is as generous as the land is harsh, and that the scene depicts the "preludes to war," alluding to the Great Northern War.
