This remarkably intricate bird's-eye view of Konstanz as it existed in 1633 first appeared in the third volume of Merian's Theatrum Europaeum. It features superb detail of the city's fortifications and architecture, with a key along the bottom identifying 27 places of interest. The vantage shows the Rhine emptying into Lake Constance (or Bodensee), with mountains, fields, and the Swiss town of Gottlieben in the distance. The Konstanz coat of arms overhangs the scene. The view shows the city after Catholicism was brought back under Hapsburg rule; note the Jesuit college near Lake Constance, which was opened in 1604. North is oriented to the right.
