This map is based on Ortelius' oval map of the world with huge polar continents providing balance for the world's continents. A Northwest Passage is prominently featured. Italian text below the map and on verso. Published in one of the larger format volumes from 1598 or 1599.

Galle's miniature Ortelius atlas enjoyed so much success that it was copied by Pietro Marchetti for the Italian market. Marchetti's atlas based is often referred to as the plagiarized version of the Epitome. The copper plates are closely copied from those of Philip Galle's 1588 edition.

See also lot 734 for Geoffrey King's Miniature Antique Maps and lot 735 for Rodney Shirley's The Mapping of the World that both describe this map.

References: King (3rd ed.) #1598; Shirley #214.

Condition: B+

A crisp impression on a bright sheet with a few spots of foxing and marginal staining. The bottom portion of the sheet has been trimmed off, with loss of part of the text, and there is a small chip along the left edge of the sheet.
