This handsome atlas of the state is complete with 1 folding, 23 double-page, and 22 single-page maps. Of particular interest is the intricately detailed Geological Map of New Jersey by George Cook. The map is color-coded to present 21 different geologic units and also locates counties, towns and cities, post offices, railroads, rivers, and more. Cook was appointed Assistant Geologist of New Jersey in 1853 and was promoted to State Geologist in 1864. The atlas includes a topographical map of the state as well along with a map of the United States, which depicts an early Wyoming Territory just prior to Yellowstone National Park being created. The atlas continues with a long series of county maps and city/village plans throughout the state. These maps delineate townships, locate towns, villages, post offices, railroads, roads, schools, courthouses, and much more. Despite being dedicated to New Jersey, the atlas includes a double-page map of New York City and a single-page map of Philadelphia. Accompanying text describes the state's geography, climate, geology and history. Engraved by Louis Neuman and printed by Charles Hart. Rebacked over original brown cloth-covered boards with gilt title and illustration on the front cover.
