This detailed bird's-eye plan of Chicago was created by Frederic M. Thrasher to illustrate the nature of gang activity in the city. Gangs with "club rooms" are marked with triangles, while gangs without club rooms are marked with circles. The names of many of these gangs are also identified, along with notations on some of the interrelationships between rival gangs. Concentrations of various ethnic and religious groups are also noted on the map. The map is accompanied by Thrasher's book, published in 1927, which was the culmination of his three years of research on the sociological and geographical underpinnings of criminal gang activity in Chicago. Thrasher was a Sociology professor at the University of Chicago, and his book influenced later research on juvenile delinquency and urban subcultures. 571 pages with a number of illustrations. Hardbound in brown cloth with title labels on the front cover and spine.
