This highway map of the state was issued by The Samuel Frommer Company in Indianapolis. A legend at upper right identifies four different road types on the map including hard surfaced, semi-hard surfaced, graded and unimproved. Of particular interest is the depiction of Conners Highway on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. The highway was the creation of Buffalo businessman Willliam J. Conners, who built the 52-mile private toll road through the Everglades from near West Palm Beach to Okeechobee City. The highway was a significant engineering achievement and contributed to the development of south and central Florida. However, the tolls were expensive, and the state purchased the road in 1930 after Connors’ death. On the verso are illustrations of various attractions in the state and text promoting Conners highway and his holdings in Okeechobee City, which was “destined to become the Chicago of Southern Florida.” Self-folding with an attractive illustration of a car driving on the new highway.
