Written by Erl H. Ellis, this is an essential reference work for the collector or researcher of historical Colorado maps. The author notes in the foreword that the book was intended "to give the general reader a little assistance in understanding the meanings and functions of some of the lines that appear on maps of Colorado. Rather arbitrarily I have selected for discussion mostly those lines bounding the State and its counties, but some other kinds of lines are included." He further notes that this book "is no complete catalogue of all maps of Colorado that have been published, although a large number of nineteenth century published maps are discussed."
