This high-quality Italian atlas is complete with 52 plates including 48 maps, 3 diagrams and a sheet of naval flags. The maps have contemporary outline color and include 13 double-page, 4 folding, and 33 single-page maps. The atlas features maps of the world (4), ancient world (7), Europe (17), Asia (7), Africa (2) and the Americas (11). Of particular interest is the two-sheet map of the western hemisphere. On the North America sheet, a massive Luigiana runs through the center of the United States, overlapping with a large Missouri Territory. South of Lake Superior, in present-day Wisconsin, Territorio di Nord Ouest is named. The Prov. di Texas is part of Mexico, as is Nuovo Messico, which appears here as a narrow strip of land wedged between two mountain ranges. California is divided into Nuova and Vecchia, with Nuova Albione and Nuo Giorgia to the north. The river systems in the Pacific Northwest reflect the findings from the Lewis & Clark expedition. Florida is still split into East and West. Alaska is labeled America Russa. On the South America sheet, there are plenty of place names and great topographical detail. It extends to include New Zealand and numerous other Pacific islands. Other maps of interest include an attractive double-hemisphere world map, single-page map of the eastern United States, and double-page maps of both the Greater and Lesser Antilles. Maps have strong impressions on bright sheets with contemporary outline color. Most are near fine (A) with a handful being very good (B+) with minor soiling/staining and archival repairs to small tears and/or separations, including the folding world map, Italy, and sheet of flags. The half-title has archival reinforcement on verso. Text is mostly clean and bright with a light stain visible in the title page and early text pages including the preface. Rebound with minor wear to covers and spine.
