This volume features Lieutenant Edward Maguire's 44-page report and appendices (Appendix PP, pp. 1337-1380) including many details on the Custer battle and its aftermath from first hand reports of officers in the various units. Includes Lt. M’Clernand’s “Journal of the Marches Made by the Forces under Colonel John Gibbon…” and short reports from both Wallace and Wilson. Beyond Maguire's report, the 619-page volume includes numerous other reports, maps and other plates, notably Wheeler’s Annual Report (Appendix NN) and his Progress Map of the U. S. Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian (22.3 x 16.2"). Hardbound in brown cloth with gilt title on the spine.

Text is clean and tight with a hint of pleasant light toning. Plates are clean, bright and near fine. There is an Essex Institute bookplate on the front pastedown. Covers have minor wear and bumped corners. An overall attractive example.
