This well-preserved leaflet coded "117-J-1" was produced by the Psychological Warfare Branch of the U.S. Army. It was dropped by U.S. forces on Japanese troops in the Philippines. The illustration on the front of the leaflet shows a Japanese soldier dozing in the grass while a silhouette of a dog appears on the hilltop bellowing a mournful howl.
The back of the leaflet contains Japanese text and is accompanied by an additional page with the official English translation. A portion of this text is shown below (see images for complete text):
"Since the American forces landed on Leyte, in every battle the Japanese forces have been destroyed or beaten back. Now you foot soldiers have been abandoned by your navy and air force. Your present condition is such that you must suffer even from shortage of food."
"Think hard. Is going to a useless death true courage? If you die meaninglessly in a strange land forgotten, who will rebuild the future Japan when peace comes?"
