This splendid map of West Africa covers the coast from just above the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn. The interior cartography is primarily Ptolemaic with the large twin lake source of the Nile. The coastline shows good detail, particularly in the areas controlled by European traders. The title cartouche represents the wealth of the continent with ivory, jewels, and exotic animals. The dedication cartouche includes the coat of arms of the Elector of Brandenburg. The map is further adorned with three sailing ships. Petrus Schenk acquired the plate from Jansson's heirs and reissued the map with the imprint of his publishing partnership and with the addition of lines of latitude and longitude. Blank verso.
