This evocative engraving depicts the Tomb of Caecilia Metella along the Via Appia. Built during the 1st century BC to honor Caecilia Metella, daughter of Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus and wife of quaestor Marcus Licinius Crassus. A family and dog in the foreground provide a sense of scale. Title in Italian and French. Engraved by A. Parboni.

A dark impression on a sheet with light foxing that is mostly confined to the ample margins. There are short edge tears and a light dampstain, all well away from engraved image. Remnants of hinge tape on verso.
