Published in the year following the launch of Sputnik, this Space Age map focuses on "a few long-standing puzzles of nature which may soon be cleared up by space explorers." Among the great mysteries this map takes as its subject are cosmic rays, gravity, interplanetary expeditions, and the expanding universe. It starts on the ground in the United States, showing scientific facilities like Cape Canaveral, the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., and the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico, expanding outward into the cosmos to depict satellites, rocket ships, Venus, Mars, sun spots, and the Andromeda Nebula. Text along the map's periphery and on verso further delves into scientific inquiries, and there is a message on verso from Dr. James R. Killian, Jr., President of MIT and Special Assistant to President Eisenhower for Science and Technology. Drawn by Rudy de Reyna for AMOCO (American Oil Company), with a can of their Super Permalube Motor Oil floating out into space. Self-folding into pictorial wrappers (9.0 x 6.5") featuring an astronaut.
