This map of the Eastern Hemisphere was based upon a mural created by painter N.C. Wyeth which decorated Hubbard Memorial Hall, the National Geographic Society's first formal library. While the map itself is based upon modern information and political boundaries, the style and decorative elements are characteristic of 16th century maps including depictions of Zeus, a wind head, and several explorers. The murals also served as the frontispiece to the March, May, July, November, and December magazine issues from 1928; this was the fourth in the series, appearing in the November 1928 issue.
