This engraving is based on an oil painting by Benjamin West, which was completed in 1771–72. The engraving shows William Penn and other settlers trading with Native Americans. Several buildings in the background are under construction. The scene illustrates Penn entering into the Treaty of Shackamaxon of 1683 with the Lenape, who were also known as the Delaware Indians. The treaty served to create peace between the Quakers and Lenape. Engraved by Robert Delaunay.
